Complications
Risperdal® is prescribed to help improve thinking, mood, and behavior for children & adolescents with mental illness, behavioral disorders, and developmental disabilities.
Some of the more common, minor side effects from taking this medication include:
- constipation
- cough
- diarrhea
- dry mouth
- headache
- heartburn
- increased dream activity
- increased length of sleep
- nausea
- sleepiness or unusual drowsiness
- sore throat
- stuffy or runny nose
- unusual tiredness or weakness
- weight gain
Although Risperdal® works to improve symptoms for you or a loved one who suffers from any of these diagnoses, such as schizophrenia or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), it can also cause some more serious, detrimental side effects such as gynecomastia.
What is Gynecomastia?
Risperdal® causes male breast tissue enlargement, known as gynecomastia. The adverse side effects of Risperdal® and this condition can be humiliating and end up causing more harm than good in its users.
These side effects are a result of the abnormal level of hormones produced when taking Risperdal®. Prolactin, a hormone that stimulates the production of milk in pregnant women, increases greatly when taking Risperdal® and could be one reason boys may experience abnormal breast growth.
Correcting Gynecomastia
This emotionally damaging condition can lead to boys needing mastectomies (surgical removal of breasts) or liposuction to remove the breast tissue. Not to mention, the phsychologically devastating effects may lead to other conditions, including depression. In 2007, there were 389,000 teens and children prescribed Risperdal® to treat ADHD.
If you or a loved one developed breasts after taking Risperdal®, you may be entitled to financial compensation for your medical bills and pain and suffering.
