Risperdal®

Risperdal® (generic name is Risperidone) is a type of antipsychotic medication used to treat people who suffer from behavioral disorders, mental illnesses, or other developmental disabilities. It’s mainly prescribed to treat symptoms of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and irritability in people with autism. Although Risperdal® works to improve symptoms those who suffer from any of these diagnoses, it’s also associated with serious side effects such as the increased risk of developing gynecomastia, a condition that causes male breast tissue enlargment.

Lawsuits and Settlements

Settlements between Johnson & Johnson and the US government to resolve charges of its illegal promotion of Risperdal® to children and the elderly were made. This also includes reaffirmation from Johnson & Johnson regarding the promotion of atypical antispsychotics for off-label uses, and any false or misleading claims related to the medication. 

In 2013, Johnson & Johnson plead guilty to criminal charges and paid a $2.2 Billion settlement to the US government to resolve charges of its illegal promotion of Risperdal to children and the elderly.
