Bravelle® may also cause serious health complications which include a range of issues such as lung problems, blood clots, stroke, or too much stimulation in the ovaries (called ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS)). More common side effects include stomach cramps, headache, bloating, hot flashes, and breathing problems.

Some of Bravelle’s® minor side effects include:

• Stomach cramps
• Stomach fullness and bloating

• Nausea
• Pain
• Pelvic pain

• Trouble breathing
• Pain after egg removal (retrieval)

On the other hand, women exposed themselves to more serious complications that are also associated with Bravelle®, which may not have been the case if they knew the treatment was ineffective. The more serious side effects include: 

•  Rash
• Swelling of the face and throat
• Rapid swelling all over the body
• Trouble breathing
• Ovaries that are too large
• Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS)
• Lung problems
• Blood clots
• Ovarian torsion – twisting of the ovaries
• Tumors of the ovary
• Birth defects
• Ectopic pregnancy
• Miscarriage
• Pregnancy with and birth of multiple babies

What is Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome (OHSS)? 

Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) is a result of too much stimulation in the ovaries which may occur when estrogen levels become too high. This causes the ovaries to enlarge, which can cause rapid weight gain, abdominal pain, vomiting and shortness of breath. Symptoms are usually monitored for a couple weeks after Bravelle® treatments, and can include:

• Rapid weight gain
• Severe abdominal pain
• Severe, persistent nausea and vomiting
• Decreased urination
• Dark urine
• Shortness of breath
• Tight or enlarged abdomen
• Dizziness
