Treating type 2 diabetes can be a very frustrating experience, as you may know. You work closely with your doctor and work hard to maintain a diet and exercise program to support optimum health, and you can still run into complications.
Sometimes those complications have to do with the natural ebbs and flows of your body chemistry and your diabetes, but sometimes the cause can be from an outside source. Some Type 2 diabetes patients who took Invokana developed a dangerous condition known as ketoacidosis. This is a buildup of acids that doesn’t normally impact type 2 diabetes patients, and the condition may require hospitalization.
Signs, symptoms and complications of ketoacidosis
MedlinePlus, a publication of the U.S. National Library of Medicine, notes that common symptoms of ketoacidosis include:
- Decreased alertness
- Deep, rapid breathing
- Dry skin and mouth
- Flushed face
- Frequent urination and thirst
- Fruity-smelling breath
- Headache
- Muscle stiffness or aches
- Nausea and vomiting
- Stomach pain
These symptoms can lead to more serious complications which include brain edema, or fluid on the brain, a heart attack, or kidney failure. If you or a loved one suffered any of the serious complications of ketoacidosis, you might see that these complications could easily be present for a non-diabetes patient who suffered the same complications – for this reason, it may be necessary to review you or your loved one’s medical records to see if hospital tests showed that ketoacidosis was present at the time of your complication.
