XARELTO® and Pradaxa®
XARELTO® and Pradaxa® are both a new type of blood thinner developed by Johnson & Johnson’s New Jersey-based Janssen Pharmaceuticals division, Bayer Health Care, and Boehringer-Ingelheim that may cause excessive internal bleeding in patients taking the drug. This bleeding has been linked to serious medical injury and even death. Though it is not unusual to experience excessive bleeding when taking a blood thinner, in most cases doctors can stop the bleeding before it becomes life threatening by using a reversal agent or antidote. In the case of Pradaxa® and XARELTO®, however, there is no known reversal agent, which means that once bleeding begins there is little doctors can do to stop it.
Plaintiffs around the country are currently pursuing legal claims against the manufacturers of these drugs because of injuries or death arising from its use. The basis for these lawsuits is the fact that the manufacturers failed to warn patients of potential adverse side effects. Under U.S. law, manufacturers have an obligation to disclose important safety information about their products. The FDA has mandated increasingly specific warning labels on XARELTO® because of concerns about the drug’s safety; however, many patients took the drug without ever being told about the potential for excessive bleeding or the absence of a reliable reversal agent.

DO NOT STOP TAKING YOUR BLOOD THINNER MEDICATION WITHOUT CONSULTING WITH YOUR PHYSICIAN. As we review your case, we can help you evaluate next steps with regard to your medical condition. If you have to stop taking Pradaxa® or XARELTO®, your doctor may prescribe another blood thinner medicine. We may even put you in contact with another physician for a second opinion. Until this happens, it is important that you continue to use your Pradaxa® or XARELTO® medication to manage the condition for which it was prescribed. Stopping Pradaxa® or XARELTO® could increase your risk of having a stroke or blood clot.
